I tried setting up the environment variables but the directory excitingroot is not being created even aftaer apending the required lines in the .bashrc file in home.

The setting of the environment variables DOES NOT create directories, it simply DEFINES variables with the names of already existing directories.
You should FIRST download and unpack exciting in some directory at your choice and THEN give the name of this directory to the variable EXCITINGROOT as defined in your .bashrc file. This is the way it should work properly as mentioned in the tutorials.
