HoW exciting! 2023

Welcome to HoW exciting! 2023

Excitations in solids are among the most exciting phenomena in condensed-matter physics. In this context, density-functional theory (DFT) is the first level in a hierarchical set of models which are used to describe and understand these phenomena in real materials. Based on this, time-dependent DFT as well as Green-function based methods allow us to treat light-matter interaction, in terms of phtoemission, optical and core-level spectroscopy, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), electron energy loss spectroscopy, and more. These are most prominent topics of our lectures and hands-on training. Moreover, we will address electron-phonon coupling, charge and heat transport, and non-equilibrium processes.

The aim of this event is to survey the state-of-the-art of theoretical and computational approaches to describe different kinds of excitations (optical, magnetic, vibrational, etc.) in condensed-matter systems, to discuss future perspectives of these methodologies and their applications in different research fields, and to confront advances in theoretical and computational methods with the latest developments in experimental techniques as well as applications.

LOGO-adlershof

HoW exciting! 2023 will be held at the Campus Adlershof  of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. It consists of two closely related events, a hands-on tutorial and an international workshop:

Hands-on tutorial on excitations in solids (August 2-7, 2023)

This tutorial offers (not only) young scientists the opportunity to get introduced into various theoretical approaches by world-leading experts. At the same time, they will get hands-on training with the software package exciting. These exercises will guide participants through many features of the code, in particular concerning the topics addressed in the subsequent workshop. The program will also provide an outlook to opportunites by (pre)exascale computers.

Please note: The last session of the Hands-on tutorial ("User projects") will take place on Monday, August 7, from 9 am. to 1 pm.

Workshop on excitations in solids (August 7-10, 2023)

This international workshop aims at gathering researchers with different background and specialization, representing various areas of excitations in condensed matter. Basic concepts will be discussed, and applications to real functional materials will be presented, from both theory and experiment.

The main goals of this workshop are:

The workshop is organized in topical sessions, including invited and contributed talks as well as a poster session.

Please note: The workshop will start on Monday, August 7 from after 1 pm, ending on Thursday, August 10 at about 1 pm.
